Aranjuez

1998

Sometime in 1998, when we were living in Madrid, Elsa's brother Jairo and his wife Liliana visited us from Colombia. They wanted to go to Alicante on the coast of Spain. Elsa took them to Atorcha Station and helped them find their seats on the train. Before she knew it, the train set-off with Elsa still on board. She explained to the guard that she wasn’t supposed to be travelling and wanted to get off, but he said the next stop was Albacete. Elsa had no idea where that was, and was dumbstruck when the guard said it was 200 kms away! Fortunately, after about 20 minutes, near Aranjuez, the guard managed to get the train to stop going through a marshalling yard. Elsa climbed down, crossed a few tracks, and without hesitation flagged down an express going in the opposite direction back to Madrid. It stopped for her, she climbed aboard and made it back home!
